What can an AI chatbot actually do for a small business?

What AI chatbots really do for small businesses — answering customers out of hours, capturing leads, taking bookings. What they're good at, what they're not, and what it costs.

“AI chatbot” covers everything from a glorified FAQ box to something genuinely useful. If you’re wondering whether one’s worth having, here’s what they actually do.

We build AI chatbots for businesses, so this is based on what they’re actually used for rather than what they’re marketed as.

The problem they solve

Most enquiries don’t arrive during office hours. Someone finds you at 10pm, has a question, doesn’t get an answer, and goes to whoever replies first. By morning that enquiry’s gone and you never knew it existed.

That’s the gap. A chatbot trained on your business answers them there and then — and takes their details while they’re still interested.

What a good one does

Answers questions about your business. Your services, your prices, how you work, what areas you cover, what happens next. Anything a customer would normally phone or email to ask.

Captures leads. Not just information — it takes contact details and enquiry details, so you wake up to a lead rather than a missed opportunity.

Takes bookings and reservations. If people book time with you — appointments, tables, consultations — it can capture that directly rather than sending them to a form.

Handles the repetitive stuff. Every business has questions it answers fifty times a week. Opening hours, parking, whether you cover a postcode, how long something takes. That’s time back.

Works when you don’t. Evenings, weekends, bank holidays. The enquiries don’t stop, so neither does it.

What it won’t do

It won’t replace your team. It handles the routine layer so people reach you with the questions that actually need you.

It won’t know things you haven’t told it. A chatbot works from your information — your services, your process, your FAQs. It’s only as good as what it’s given.

And it can get things wrong if it’s left to guess. That’s why the setup matters: build it to work from your actual information rather than inventing answers, set clear limits, and have it hand over to a human when it doesn’t know. Test it against real questions before it goes anywhere near a customer.

What it costs

Less than most people assume. Our chatbots are £50 a month — custom-trained on your business, integrated into your existing site, no setup fee. Most are live within a week or two.

For context, that’s a fraction of what it costs to have someone answering enquiries out of hours, and it doesn’t sleep.

Is it worth it for your business?

It’s worth it if you’re losing enquiries outside working hours, answering the same questions repeatedly, or want people to get an answer immediately rather than waiting for a reply.

It’s less useful if your enquiries are complex from the first contact, or if your customers reach you by phone rather than through your site.

If you’re not sure which you are, tell us how enquiries reach you and we’ll tell you whether a chatbot would earn its place — and what it’d handle.
